Man has transported many species around the world and they have adapted to many different climates. It is a very useful plant in that its fibers can be used for cloth, sweet syrups can be made from the blooms, and the famous liquor Mescal is made from the heart of the plant. Agaves are not related in any way to the aloe. They are most closely related to the yucca and are not a cactus.

When I was young, I had a cactus garden where I had planted many different species of succulents, cactus, and other desert plants. I had 3 different species of agave and loved the beauty and symmetry of the leaves.

Agave Americana seriously dehydrated

A neighbor has recently given me a tiny agave. She received one in a plant exchange they had at her school. It is definitely in very sad shape and needs some TLC. I am in the process of giving it enough water to sustain it through the planting process.

Agaves, especially the A. Americana, are probably the most dangerous desert plant you can find. The leaves have an extremely sharp spine on the tip that can penetrate through your entire body, stopping only if it encounters a bone. These plants were the most dangerous for any horse rider. Falling onto an agave plant from above was certain impalement. Cacti, and other desert plants do not have that kind of danger. While you can get infections from getting poked by multiple spines, the spines generally only inflict painful wounds that can be easily treated once you find a good medic. (The only exception to this is the Saguaro. That large cactus has been the means of many people's death due to crushing because of the shear weight of it, usually because of them stupidly doing something like chopping one down, or running into one with a vehicle.) Puncture of your heart, lungs, or other vital organs by an agave leaf is not so easy to treat.

Agave in the Sedona area

As I was growing up, I found that there were 3 kinds of people who grew agave. The first was the newcomer who wasn't aware of how really dangerous agave plants are to have around. They would grow them but after being poked seriously a few times, they often would dig them out and plant a less dangerous species like a true cactus or desert tree or give up on spiny desert foliage because of how easily one can be injured by most of them. The second kind, grew them much as I did to create a space of true desert beauty in their garden spaces. They would often place them around other prickly desert plants and keep them where they could be observed safely. The third are the kind who grow them to purposefully injure those who would trespass. There is a large group of people who fit in the third category in the desert southwest. That, to me, is evil.

I have a love for all plants, but I will not keep this one. Once I have revived it and been able to get it established, I will find someone who fits the second category and give it to them. I do not like to be associated with the third group and so will not keep agaves around my neighborhood, family, nor friends.

The Neighbors

The Neighbors

I was looking down the street one night and felt like something was there. Yes, they were very barbaric, but then everyone was very barbaric. Especially the capitalists who used the military to crush the rebellions. He was complaining that socialists would take everything that he had worked to make for himself and give it to someone else. My letter:
When did a socialist ever foreclose on your house?

When did a socialist ever make your kids go to work in a factory instead of attending school?
When did a socialist ever take away your education opportunities?

When did a socialist ever make you work more than 40 hours without extra pay?
When did a socialist ever refuse to allow you a paid vacation?

When did a socialist ever take away your retirement funds? (Because of the capitalist criminals in wall street, my father is loosing his retirement funds that were put into "investments" by the state when he worked as a teacher.)
When did a socialist ever take away your social security? (Capitalists took the social security funds from the government insurance plan and put them in the general fund to help fund the mega-military complex - capitalists strike again)

When did a socialist ever take away your health care? (insurance companies will deny you coverage for the most insignificant infractions such as a chronic dis-ease or even an accident)
When did a socialist ever force you to sell everything you have and declare bankruptcy because of outrageous interest rates?

When did a socialist ever take away your pension funds that you have worked for all your working life?
When did a socialist ever deny you any form of retirement fund and raise your retirement age?

When did a socialist ever take away hemp? (It was a "bought and paid for government" that prohibited hemp for the profits of one man.)
When did a socialist ever take anything away from you other than a percentage of taxes based on how much you made?

Socialism:

Public roads

schools

libraries

sanitation

healthcare

livable wage

maternity leave

clean water

clean safe food (as in properly labeled and toxic chemicals prohibited)

40 hour work week

paid vacations

child labor laws

affordable housing

appropriate retirement (with money)

reigning in on banking institutions

Alternative health care that works (ie: hemp and other treatments not capitalist driven)

What have socialists taken away from you? Please tell me. I see nothing but gives, not takes.

Capitalists would deny you all of the above if you weren't one of the 'god blessed' rich ones. This has been the class war since the signing of the Magna Carta. Why should we, who create the wealth for the obscenely rich bastards, not receive anything for our work... That is what socialism is all about.
It is always baffling to me when I hear so called Christians railing against Socialism when those are the very principles that supposedly Jesus Christ taught. One really big WTF!

Most people are totally misinformed by the capitalists of this country that have been using the propaganda machines for a very long time. Do some non-capitalist reading... which isn't anything you will hear out of a Democrat either... they too are capitalists. When Calvin started his religious teachings, that is when the capitalist propaganda began. A good starting book would be "Escape From Freedom" by Erich Fromm.
Puritans and many of the other religious rogues that escaped from Europe are philosophically descended from Calvin. Mormonism is Calvinism dressed up in an American flag. Calvinism was a persecuted religion because of its intolerance of other peoples' beliefs and the absolute cruelty they dealt to their believers who strayed, kind of like Islam. Remember, it was the Puritans (Pilgrims) who had the Salem Witch Trials.

Many are in conflict with their beliefs and actions if they cannot support the ideals of what the socialists are trying to achieve. Socialism is the interim step between what we are choking and dying in right now and the Zeitgeist Movement. It begins to place the importance on sustainable industries and human resources. It denigrates the importance of hierarchy and elevates the individuals' contributions.
Capitalists use the law to devour small businesses. In a truly socialist society, the owners of what we now have as large corporations would be the workers. We would not have any 'ceo' getting paid an obscene wage with boners on top of that. (yes, that was on purpose ;-) Small businesses would thrive because the large corporations would be nixed out of making decisions that crush small businesses. There would be no more lobbying on behalf of large corporations... they would no longer exist. Because of the influence of the United States (and other imperialist countries, ie: France, England) around the world, crushing any attempts to get rid of corporate power, we have never seen a true socialist state. It has never really existed except in isolated instances where labor unions have gone against the big powers and prevailed (early 20th century in the U.S.), and in tribal communities untouched by modern civilization.

So this brings me back to my question... What have the socialists taken from you? It has been fear mongering by the right wing capitalists (often using Calvinist religions to support this fallacious belief) that has kept us from even thinking about anything but money and how to get it, and accepting that we must have done something wrong if we aren't 'successful' capitalists.

Lightning At Westglenn

August 24, 2004

It was a dark and stormy night. At first they were shying away from us. I had been going out to Roger’s Lake for photos for some time and had never seen horses there so I wondered if they were wild ones passing through. I made a whistle noise and suddenly they were right by us. I started shooting, but soon was defending my tripod from them trying to munch on it. I think they were asking why I didn’t have any goodies for them. If I had known, or even suspected, I would have brought some carrots.

After a bit I heard a noise in the distance around where the homes dotted the tree line and the horses took off running towards home.

Niphados has emerged from the snow to play.

Niphados came out of the big snow of 2010. She tried to emerge a couple of times but remained buried under all that snow for a long time. She did finally emerge towards the last of the snow and she was beautiful. She crumbled the walls of the fortress with her talons and tail, laid some eggs so there would be more dragons for our future, and was in the spotlight for her magnificence on the front page of the local newspaper. Apparently the City does not turn on the Holiday lights in the park as an effort to save its budget. This has been a real disappointment for many of the Flagstaff Residents. It is understandable, but still a disappointment. This first image is of the only tree in front of city hall lit up with holiday lights.

In the searches for some really bizarre looking scenes I decided to check out the Church of the Nativity again. The lights are on there sporadically, but even without the church lights turned on the street lights create some really strange effects. The lights were on. So I started taking photos of this structure built around the turn of the 20th century.

The church is painted pink on the concrete surfaces and volcanic stone faces the rest of the structure. What amazes me is that the lights on the church itself are reddish orange. Now I don't know what prompted them to put that color of light on the church, but when looking at it from a distance it carries with it a red glow, much more pronounced than just incandescent lighting. Photographs make it look a hellish red. I wonder sometimes if this isn't a subconscious or even conscious effort to scare; images in the back of the mind, constant reminders of Hell. And these images can only be seen at night, the time of Horace/Satan/Pluto/Hades.

Something interesting to note is that there have been no new Catholic churches built with gargoyles. And in Europe they had quit building them a long time before this one was built (close to 100 years before). Why would they put gargoyles on a "modern" church. David Icke brings up an interesting idea that he came across in his studies. Only Catholic churches with catacombs have gargoyles on them. A little investigation into the subterranean of Flagstaff shows that there are underground tunnels all over the city and they actually connect to the underground structures of the Church of the Nativity. You cannot enter the church from underground (locked) but if there are structures underground then it is not out of the realm of possibilities that there exists catacombs of some kind or another.

So, here are some of the photos that I took last night and the thoughts that ran through my head as I was taking them. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running and robbing the country. The Yellow Jacket and the Paper Wasp. Fortunately, we don't have very many Yellow Jacket wasps buzzing around our house. We have lots of the Paper Wasps, Muddaubers, and various other rather shy wasps.

When I say "shy wasps" that doesn't mean that they won't sting. It just means that if we as humans are not near or threatening their nests they have no reason to bother us and will usually fly away. They will even avoid being close to us unless they don't notice that we are there.

Yellow Jackets are not that way. They are aggressive towards anything that may become food. That includes any mammal, fish, reptile or insect. I have found them building nests in animal carcasses and eating the carcass. A typical Yellow Jacket trap uses the smell of dead and rotting meat as an attractant. This kind of attractant will not attract any of the other wasps that I have seen around our house. I tested that.

This first image is of the typical paper wasp that has built numerous nests around our house. I have been constantly getting rid of the nests that are too close to our regular paths and children's play areas. If I could find a way to make an area where they could nest away from our house I would do that. I have witnessed them collecting bugs out of our garden to feed their larva. An interesting article about the food collecting and what wasps actually eat by the National Geographic is here.

This second photo shows a Paper Wasp on the left and a Yellow Jacket on the right. Notice the Abdomen shape and size with relation to the rest of the Yellow Jacket body and compare that with the Paper Wasp in the first photo. Note also the posture of the two. These are typical differences. However it is not easy to discern the two unless you are around them all the time.

Our family owns some property north of Williams and it is Yellow Jacket country. That is where I've seen them eating and nesting in carcasses. They are aggressive and constantly looking for fresh meat and will invade any picnic if food is out. A good article on how to build a Yellow Jacket trap is here.

Thanks for reading this and hope it helps in understanding wasps a bit more.

Observations of a Casual Gardener

Before I begin this blog, I have to explain a few things about myself. I do not enjoy destroying any life. As a human I have to maintain a certain lifestyle that includes protector of my wife, grandkids, and pets. Because of this roll in life, I have to do things against my normal character. That said, here are my observations.

We have a large number of wasps visiting our yard. Most of them are the paper wasp and mud dauber variety. We have the occasional Tarantula Hawk, hornet, and other very large ones come in and visit, but most are the smaller ones. There is a metallic looking black wasp with black wings that is about the size of a mud dauber, a little larger than the paper wasps, that visits regularly, but it is usually a single wasp.

The paper wasps are so prolific that they have started making nests very close to where my grand kids and I have to work and play. I was noticing that the paper wasps were getting riled rather frequently. Every time I went into the work shed, I had a bunch of them start buzzing around anyone who was outside. They had built their nest inside one of the hinges of the shed. The shed is a Rubber Maid shed so has lots of spaces in many parts of it, especially the hinges. So whenever I touched the shed it vibrated their nest and they would start harassing all the larger animals. That nest had to go.

A couple of days after I had found and destroyed the nest I found a wasp just sitting on the opened hinge (I actually disassembled the hinge). Its antennae was down and body against the plastic. As I was watching it another wasp would fly up to it, wrap its legs around the one on the hinge and then let go and fly away again. This happened several times with the wasp on the hinge not moving. I took several photos but was unable to actually photograph that behavior. The only time the wasp moved was when I got to within 1/2 inch with my camera. Then it would either raise its antennae or move away a little bit, then return to its same posture. It appeared to me that the wasp was feeling loss or sadness, complex emotions for an invertebrate.

Observing that behavior, I actually felt a bit of remorse for destroying its nest/home/residence. It is not the wasps fault, they actually found a perfect place to make a nest. It was protected from the weather and other predators. And the snow never reached that high last year.

And here is another reason for a bit of remorse for having to destroy the nest of a very complex creature. This worm (caterpillar) had been eating the sunflower leaves. If the egg had been laid on one of my garden vegetables, it would have done the same as it did on the sunflower. The worm was spinning a web for protection and I was wondering why the wasps hadn't done anything to it.

After awhile later I came back to the sunflowers to get more photos of the mud daubers that were flocking in on them when I noticed this paper wasp. It was dancing around trying to make a hole in the worm silk. It spent quite a bit of time for an insect to get to the worm but was finally successful in extracting it.

The wasp had to pull the caterpillar out of the silk. The caterpillar was of course struggling to get away the whole time. What surprised me was that the wasp never once stung the caterpillar.

Then the wasp chewed the head off of the worm, dropped it, and rolled the worm into a small ball and flew off, I presume, to the nest to feed the family.

I have watched wasps in my garden walking around inside of holes in our vegetables looking for their prey. I have to leave the greenhouse door open so it doesn't get too hot and the wasps are welcome in there. They buzz around me all the time when I am in there. I am looking for vegetables to pick for dinner and they are looking for their dinner.

God's True Identity Revealed!!!!

In an article dated Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009, by the Arizona Daily Sun, the true identity of God was revealed. In a realatively innocuous article about the closing of the Vercamp's Curios store at the Grand Canyon a declaration of the true identity of God was made. And I quote, "Grand Canyon was created on Feb. 26, 1919, by President Woodrow Wilson."

Is this an executive power placed in the hands of the president of the United States? What implications does this have for our current political situations. I also noticed that the New Moon was rising in the west. (That is the apparent direction it traverses the sky each day, not the daily appearance of it. It moves from West to East with relation to the stars and other heavenly objects.) I found out that this alignment won't happen again until 2052.

Due to energy costs the people caring for the Church of the Nativity were leaving the lights off most days. So it was very questionable whether I would even be able to get a shot worth anything if I tried to get the alignment of the moon and planets over the church.

When I got there the objects were very high in the sky and I knew it would be one of the most difficult shots I've ever done since it would be totally dark when the church steeple would be in the alignment.

As expected, the church lights were turned off and I only had ambient light (which was next to nothing) to work with. I did manage to get my flash to reach that far, but the colors were terrible using it. Even with the camera color balancing it was not that good.

In spite of all of that, it looks like I have something I can work with. I will have to work with the individual shots as layering the images won't work since the Earth is spinning too quickly and nothing stays aligned. A 20-30 second exposure will show star streaks and most of the shots had to be between 1/4 sec to 30 sec. I never used the "bulb" setting since all my shots were 30 sec. or less.

4 AA batteries in my battery pack were dead (10 pack). I was having such a difficult time since my flash and my flashlight needed batteries. The batteries were so dead that even when they were put with good ones nothing worked. This is a reminder to check your batteries BEFORE you get out to the site. I had charged all my camera batteries, but failed to check the AA's. I thought they were all good since I hadn't used them, but apparently they can go dead just sitting in the backpack. (Note for me: get a small battery checker I can keep in my camera bag.)

I bracketed all my exposures using f-stops and exposure times both. I wish I had changed the ISO settings also. (Another reminder: bracket ISO settings on really important shots.)

There are several images that I will have to really adjust quite a bit to make them work, but I think I can pull one of them out of the darkness. I have some shots that have starbursts around the moon and Venus. On a few of them the moon starburst is silhouetting the cross at the top of the steeple. I think one of these will be the best for composition and crowd appeal. The cross looks so dark against the light of the heavens. (<--good photo label message).

The mistakes I made during this shoot are typical mistakes. I should have known better, but I haven't been able to get out and get low light photos for quite a while now. One constant I find with any of the arts is practice is necessary to keep your mind sharp. I apparently have some real bad nicks in my photography edge. If you wish to get good with photography, you have to constantly practice.

Thanks for reading this and I hope it helps.

Music In My Life

If you would like to know what kind of music I like to play, just press the play button in the Last.FM box below. I am still harvesting pickling cucumbers, chives, and waiting on the garlic to dry out. We did get some tomatoes, but they still aren't ripe. I am going to try to find some greenhouse materials to cover the structure so we can maybe have vegetables all winter long.

If I can get it covered before the first frost we will probably have a good tomato and pepper crop. I still can't get the peppers to produce, but I think it is a lack of heat. The greenhouse will probably make them produce... at least that is my hope.

I may be making some hot boxes to put next to our house so the plants will stay warm all winter. That seems to be the warmest place in our yard.

I'm also probably going to be moving the compost away from the south fence. Not enough sunlight in the winter.

We harvested snow and sugarsnap peas, and bush beans all summer long. They really produced well after I separated them from the garlic by planting beets between them. I also had a row of peas away from the garlic that did very well also.

I was disappointed in my okra, but I did get some, where last year I got nothing. So I guess that is an improvement.

Getting better at this. I installed a sprinkler system in the garden and that helped tremendously in sprouting and keeping the plants watered properly. It is so hard to do that by hand and I either overwater or underwater. The sprinkler system was probably the single major factor in getting the garden to grow so well this year.

The beets didn't do very well this year. I think it is because they didn't get enough light, with the peas growing over them. However, what we did get were some of the tastiest beets I've ever eaten. These will make beet eaters out of people who hate them. My grand kids were disappointed that we only got one meal out of the small things. I am definitely planting a separate garlic/beet garden this next year.

Now it is "On to the winter garden" in this harsh climate.

Howdy my Friends,

I have news about my vegetable garden. Before I checked with the guides on planting I planted a couple of incompatible veggies along side each other. My first row was Sugar Snap Peas and the second row was (ARGG!) Garlic.

Well the Garlic came up very nicely but the peas just didn't do so well. When I did my reading for the rest of the garden, I discovered my mistake. DO NOT PLANT LEGUMES WITH GARLIC. Uh oh, now what to do.

As I was reading I found that Beets do well with just about any other plant. Garlic enhances the taste of the Beets so I thought I'd try planting beets between the garlic and the peas. This makes a very crowded garden along the edges, but to my surprise the peas started growing much better. The beets are acting as a barrier between the garlic and peas. All it took was for the beets to sprout and the barrier was made.

I planted another row of beets away from everything giving them enough room to grow and to leaf out well. Less than half of them even sprouted. Almost every one of the beets by the garlic sprouted. Hmmmm better plant beets right next to the garlic from now on. Use beets to buffer garlic from other plants that don't do so well being that close to garlic.

We have 4 corn plants, 6-8 bush bean plants, 4 okra plants, 12 pickling cucumber plants (that may need to be thinned), over 60 garlic plants, too many to count sugar snap pea plants, and various pepper and tomato sprouts trying to survive. There are also many beets growing. Hopefully we can get a crop out of some of these vegetables. (You know, enough to fill a pot and have a meal.)

There are already 3 or 4 pea pods growing on the tiny pea plants. And as the beets start getting larger leaves we can pick those and have some really tasty beet greens.

Hope this helps someone in their gardening efforts,

Sardior

How to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear

About 12 days ago, we received a letter from the management of our mobile home park that we had 10 days to put up a fence across our back yard. Fortunately we were planning on doing that anyway, but not that soon. I was in the middle of trying to get a garden started and cleaning up the yard so I could do some other work such as make shelves for our windows and start making drums again.

After sending out letters to almost every tenant in the park for things to fix on each home here, rumor is that they are regretting putting that kind of deadline in the letter. My suspicions are that there are some very busy lawyers right now. To put those kinds of financial demands on people is just plain cruel. And, I believe (don't know for sure) it is illegal.

Anyway, I got the fence done with a large double gate. Fortunately I only needed to put up a 16 foot section including the gate.

During that time I also got the huge rocks removed from my garden area and was able to put up an 8' x 8' raised garden. We are not out of frost danger until June so I've planted sugar snap peas, garlic, chives, bunch onions, and cold weather radishes. I have planted in peat pots in the house, pickling cucumbers, Serrano peppers, Anaheim peppers, Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, regular peas, bush beans, okra, awaiting for our spring to start. Hopefully, they will germinate and I will have a garden full of vegetables.

Just a note to let people know what I've been doing lately.

Thanks for reading this,

Sardior
